Quick answer: To use a Scentsy Diffuser, lift off the shade, fill the reservoir of the Diffuser Base with water up to the fill line, add a few drops of a Scentsy Natural Oil Blend, replace the shade and switch it on. Choose a mist setting to set the fragrance strength and a light setting, and the diffuser turns the scented water into a fine, cool mist for up to 8 hours on a full 120 ml reservoir. It switches itself off when the water runs out, so there is no flame, no wax and nothing to watch.
There is a quiet pleasure in the moment a diffuser starts up: a soft plume of mist rising through a glowing shade, the room gently taking on a fragrance you chose. Whether you have just unboxed one or are weighing one up as a change from your warmer, this guide walks through how to use a Scentsy diffuser step by step, which oils to put in it, how to look after it and the honest trade-offs compared with wax.
What is a Scentsy Diffuser and how does it work?
A Scentsy Diffuser is an ultrasonic diffuser in two parts: the Diffuser Base, which holds the water and does the work, and a decorative shade that sits over it. Inside the base, a small disc vibrates very quickly and breaks the water and oil into a fine mist, which drifts up through the shade and carries the fragrance around the room. No heat is involved, which is why the mist feels cool.
Because the two parts are separate, each design is sold as a complete diffuser or as a shade on its own for a base you already have, so one base can wear several looks across the year. Scentsy covers its diffusers with a limited lifetime warranty. You can see the current designs in our Scentsy Diffusers range.
How do you use a Scentsy Diffuser step by step?
Setting up takes about two minutes, and it is the same routine every refill.
- Find a good spot. Choose a flat, stable surface at roughly table height, in an open part of the room rather than under a shelf. Mist is water, so avoid bare wood or paperwork that would mind a little dampness.
- Lift off the shade and add water. Pour water into the 120 ml reservoir up to the fill line, and no further. Overfilling is the most common reason a diffuser sputters or produces very little mist.
- Add your oil. Drop in a few drops of Scentsy Natural Oil Blend. Start modestly; you can always add a drop or two more next time if you would like the room to feel more fragranced.
- Replace the shade, plug in and choose your settings. Pick a mist setting and a light setting, and you are done. The diffuser runs until the water is used up, then switches itself off.
Which mist and light settings should you use?
Scentsy Diffusers let you adjust the fragrance strength, with high and low mist settings plus a third option; your instruction leaflet names the exact modes on your model. High gives the most noticeable fragrance and uses the water fastest, so it suits a larger room or an hour before guests arrive. Low stretches a fill towards the full 8 hours and suits a bedroom, a home office or anywhere you want a gentle background scent. The third setting is a nice middle ground for an evening on the sofa.
The light is separate from the mist, so you can run fragrance with the light off, or the light alone as a night light. There are 16 LED lighting effects, including a single fixed colour, slowly rotating colours, a soft white glow and a candle-style flicker. Most people find one favourite: a warm white in the living room, a slow colour rotation in a child’s bedroom, the flicker for a film night.
Which oils go in a Scentsy Diffuser?
Scentsy Natural Oil Blends are made for Scentsy Diffusers. They are made with naturally derived ingredients and essential oils, they are made purely for fragrance, and each bottle holds 15 ml, which is a lot of diffuser sessions when you are only using a few drops at a time. At the time of writing they are £16 a bottle in our Scentsy Diffusers range.
The fragrances lean fresher and lighter than many wax bars, which suits the mist format. Current blends include Fresh Water & Cedar, Coastal Lime & Driftwood, Blue Lavender & Bergamot, Mango Lemonade, Watermelon & Sweet Pear, Eucalyptus Lavender Mint, Morning Air & Mountain Rosewood and Moonflower & Amber. If you know the warm bakery and spice side of Scentsy Wax Bars, think of the oils as the crisp, airy end of the range. We would stick with Scentsy oils in a Scentsy Diffuser, since that is what it is designed for.
How do you clean and look after a Scentsy Diffuser?
A little routine care keeps the mist strong. Empty any leftover water rather than leaving it to sit, especially when changing fragrance, and wipe the reservoir with a soft, dry cloth. Every few weeks, or whenever the mist seems weaker, gently clean the small disc at the bottom of the reservoir with a damp cotton bud. Never submerge the base, and always unplug it before cleaning. The shade can simply be dusted.
If the mist is weak, check three things in order: is the water above the fill line, is the disc clean, and is the shade seated properly so the mist can escape. Those three fix almost every wobble we hear about. Keep the instruction leaflet, because it has the full care guidance for your model.
Is a Scentsy Diffuser better than a wax warmer? The honest trade-offs
Neither is better; they suit different moods, and plenty of homes run both.
- Fragrance style. A warmer melting a Scentsy Wax Bar gives a rich, enveloping scent that fills a room. A diffuser gives a lighter, fresher fragrance that drifts rather than fills. If you love deep gourmand or spiced scents, wax wins; if you prefer clean and airy, the diffuser shines.
- Upkeep. Wax needs changing when the fragrance fades. A diffuser needs topping up with water every session and a quick wipe between fragrances. Both are easy; they are just different habits.
- Running time. A diffuser runs for up to 8 hours on a fill and then stops on its own. A warmer runs for as long as it is switched on.
- Price. This is the biggest difference. Complete Scentsy Diffusers start at around £173 at the time of writing, with shades on their own from £67 and the Diffuser Base at £113, while many Scentsy Warmers cost considerably less. A diffuser is an investment piece, which is partly why the limited lifetime warranty matters.
- Looks. A lit diffuser with mist curling through the shade is a lovely thing to have on a sideboard, and the 16 lighting effects give it more range than most warmers.
If you are torn between the two, our guide to Scentsy Air versus a wax warmer covers the fan-based option as well, and fragrance flowers versus diffusers looks at the unplugged alternatives. It is also worth knowing that the Scentsy Diffuser is different from the app-controlled Scentsy Solo, which uses fragrance cartridges rather than water and oil, and from Scentsy Air, which uses Pods. Each needs its own refills.
At The Scented Candle Store we are Alan and Jason, Independent Scentsy Partners, and a diffuser is one of the things we are most often asked to explain, usually because the mist looks more technical than it is. Fill, drop, switch on: that is the whole routine. If you would like help choosing between a complete diffuser and a shade for a base you already own, or picking a first oil, send us a message and we will talk it through with no pressure at all. Our help and delivery page has the details on ordering, delivery and returns.

Frequently asked questions
How much water does a Scentsy Diffuser hold?
The reservoir holds 120 ml, which gives up to 8 hours of fragrance. Fill to the line and no higher, because overfilling reduces the mist.
How many drops of oil do you put in a Scentsy Diffuser?
A few drops of Scentsy Natural Oil Blend is enough for a full reservoir. Start small and add a drop or two next time if you would like the fragrance stronger; a 15 ml bottle lasts many sessions.
Does a Scentsy Diffuser switch itself off?
Yes. It switches off automatically when the water runs out, so you can run it through the evening or at bedtime without having to remember to turn it off.
Can I use the light without the mist?
Yes. The mist and the 16 LED lighting effects are controlled separately, so the diffuser can work as a night light on its own, or run fragrance with the light off.
Can I change the shade on my Scentsy Diffuser?
Yes. Shades lift off the Diffuser Base, and each design is also sold as a shade on its own, so you can change the look without buying another base.
